Started to read your posts one by one and I already love your tone, style and reflections. Plus Lucy is the twin sister of my y11 daughter. Spot on!
On the topic of stepping out of work. I have been wondering over the past weeks if I should take an unpaid sabbatical but what you say really gives me food for thought...
Thank you so much, I really appreciate this. I've been writing on Medium for a couple of years now and have only started trying a bit harder with Substack! How lovely we have similar daughters! I took a career break (basically unpaid sabbatical) for one year before resigning and I would say that I needed that gap/separation period to help me make the decision to fully leave. It's worth considering something that gives you space to weigh up options.
Hi Deborah, I Loved this really honest piece about taking a career break. I am doing exactly the same after leaving my job in July 2021 and many of your points really resonate with me. It’s such a challenge unlearning everything we have been taught about our self worth being tied to a job title but it’s so worth it :-)
Thanks so much Rebecca, I have to say it has been an interesting process and I am now at crunch point in terms of whether the career break has served as a stepping stone to completely leaving my job. Big decisions to make this week!!
It’s a difficult one, especially as stepping away from work you start to realise some of the things that are broken with it. Wishing you all the luck with your big decisions!
