Thank you so much for this Anna. I think we need to be allowed to rage. I guess that's another thing we're socialised in to as women, silencing our rage!
Deborah ,interesting piece ,my wife Joan was from Dublin ,her father TJ Rainsford CBE ,an accountant was v big in the Cof I ,a lay preacher and was on a huge amount of Committees , Moved to Belfast and joined St Judes ,They were quite victorian ,table was laid at supper ,Joans mother taught her sewing and her father odd jobs like painting etc ,Joan made her own wedding and bridesmaid dresses ,I am left handed and everything growing up we needed done by just ringing the mill and it was done for us!! So ,taking your piece I have frequently told people how in married life ( 54yrs this Oct) how great Joan has been doing things around the house and how handless I have been because of being left handed !!!!but I’m great at tidying up and making frequent cups of tea .
Hello Harry, I love this story about you being left-handed! And I imagine those cups of tea have been very welcomed over the last 54 years. Joan seems to have looked after you very well and has a range of gifts. It sounds like you are very well suited.
Absolutely on putting the dog in the kennels. I've requested/directed the same thing! Always reading your pieces; they're one of the highlights of my week.
Mary Oliver said ‘The most regretful people on earth are those who felt the call to creative work, who felt their own creative power restive and uprising, and gave to it neither power nor time.’ I love how you are giving both power and time to your creative intellect. This piece also reminded me that rage doesn’t have to lead to bitterness, it can lead to understanding ourselves better and to determined action instead. I eagerly await the book!
Thank you so much for this Laura and such wise words! I love that Mary Oliver quote and the permission to give power and time to creative intellect. I hope you will make it to the launch, more info in due course...
I identify with the putting of the dog in kennels! Brilliant piece, Deborah. And very good point about being socialised into the belief that women must experience 'imposter syndrome' if they achieve anything. Keep writing, and roll on March 2025!
I love that you know the well-spring of your rage. I realised that music was one valve to my own pressure cooker of rage. A riot grrl band channelled some of this; I miss that part of my life (and occasionally still find it on the dancefloor!) Here’s to March - looking forward to seeing what you’ve unearthed through your writing
I think there were things that mattered to us all pre-kids to give them up hurts. I love that you can still find yourself on the dance floor and I’d love to see you perform in a band again! Hope you can make the launch. More info in due course….
"I know why I’m here and what the source of my rage is and if I don’t use my intellectual ability, the rage will never go away. The dog will love the kennels. The book will be finished by October. It will be launched in March. Maybe I’ll see you there!" This made me roar for you. I believe in you and your talents and hard work. Looking forward to celebrating the result in March 💪
Oh Julie this means so much thank you! I love the fact that someone may be roaring for me! And I do hope you will make it to the launch. More information on that in due course....
I used to support your blog, but you increasingly write about nothing other than your resentment for your husband and children. You seem to belittle what he has achieved, all the while reaping the rewards through a life of privilege. Constantly on holidays, constantly eating at lovely restaurants, coming back to a stunning home, all whilst you are unemployed, and all you can do is complain.
The rest of us, in the real world, could only dream of being in your position. Get a grip with reality.
I’m not sure if we know each other Amanda but thanks for your comment. I don’t think my writing is for you but I appreciate your support to date in whatever form that has taken. Your comment extends far beyond my writing to things I have not specifically shared in my writing including an analysis of my life and my preference is that people respond to the content of the writing. I currently earn an income from writing so I would definitely not describe myself as unemployed. I wish you all the best and hope you can find other writers that provide the reality you are seeking.
Superb piece . 👌 you give voice beautifully to the swell of rage that’s building in many of us.
