Why is it, when we want to change our lives, we reach for root vegetables? I get it. I have a terrible habit of buying beetroot, then ignoring it until it's soft and defeated. Carrots on the other hand, I have a lot of time for those. I think you should take these subliminal messages from your online substitutions as gospel and see where that takes you. Instagram would never think of anything as smart as that. Love your writing, as always x

I know - I am exactly the same every year. Late December I turn my attention to root vegetables. You may be proud of me though as I boiled a bunch of beetroot yesterday, got my husband to peel it (!) and I shall be eating it in various salad concoctions for the rest of the week… And yes perhaps online substitutions are meant to tell me something…

Carrots! That actually made me laugh out loud. Besides, all things beetroot are for masochists only! Stick with carrots...... and don't think too hard!

Well you never know Rosina, maybe there will be a photo of something amazing I’ve made with beetroot next week…

I await the picture with anticipation. If you can make beetroot look delicious, I'll buy you a bun and post it to Belfast!

Excellent Deborah. I'm a big roisin ingle fan. She used to write a marvellous weekly column in saturdays irish times magazine. She is honest and funny and so real about life, the universe and everything. i remember her doing a terrific podcast some years ago but cant remember the title. Beetroot soup is a good way forward and worth trying! probably the best way we find to get it into us here. Happy new year!

Hi Jono, Happy New Year to you! Glad you enjoyed this. I love Roisin's writing too. I think she stopped writing her column because of what she was going through health-wise and because she felt she couldn't be real about her life without sharing her diagnosis and she didn't want to share it. If you get a chance, do listen to her on the Women's Irish Times podcast. Her story over the last year is so inspiring. P.S. I will maybe have a go at beetroot soup! Definitely need more soup in January!
